The abbreviation “OPV” stands for “overprint varnish.” This term is commonly used in the packaging industry in association with flexible packaging. Overprint varnish lends features to packaging, such as gloss, scratch resistance, temperature resistance or lubrication properties.
Trüb Emulsions Chemie AG markets a number of exclusively water-based binders – in the form of acrylate and acrylate-copolymer dispersions – for overprint varnishes. Thanks to the chemical combination of the formulations in our acrylate dispersions, we are capable of widely varying the properties of OPVs and adjusting them to customer specifications. Our polyethylene (PET) dispersions (wax/paraffin dispersions) provide even more possibilities for optimization in this segment.
Trüb Emulsions Chemie AG thus offers a broad range of products for all your targeted OPV solutions.

Trüb Emulsions Chemie AG exclusively manufactures raw materials for the producers of water-based overprint or dispersion varnishes. Its range comprises two different product lines: polyethylene-wax dispersions, and acrylic and acrylic-styrene resin dispersions.
Our wide range of polyethylene-wax dispersions is used above all in fields that depend on scuffing protection and lubrication.
When it comes to our acrylic and acrylic/styrene dispersions, we specialize in what are known as “soft dispersions” and have an extensive line of these products. They are used in varnish formulations to improve adhesion on various substrates or to increase the heat resistance of a varnish (up to 240°C).
We also have the right solution on hand for pre-print applications.
Overprint varnishes are applied to the surface of a given substrate. They protect packaging from mechanical damage, such as scuffing, and physical or chemical influences, such as moisture. They add a finish to the print (package information, seals, logos and other graphic elements) underneath the varnish, giving the packaging a professional appearance. Many different effects can be achieved, such as a gloss or matte finish.
Water-based varnishes are used most commonly in these applications. These dispersions varnishes have become a leading technology in the printing industry thanks to their numerous advantages: They are eco-friendly, odorless and tasteless; they do not yellow and reduce the amount of powder required for preparatory coating of the substrate. Depending on the desired effect, they form a film, i.e. are dried, either at room temperature or on exposure to heat from hot air or infrared radiation.
