In the process of lamination, a liquid lamination adhesive first is applied by a roller unit to one of two substrates/materials to be bonded, and then cured at about 80 °C. It is during this phase that the adhesive develops its adhesion characteristics on the surface of the substrate. Immediately after curing, the two target materials are bonded together: The second substrate (film, paper, board, etc.) is pressed by another roller unit onto the prepared substrate to create the desired composite material. Composites of this kind are used in any number of everyday articles, such as cartons for packaging milk or juice (film composite inside, board outside) and chewing gum wrappers (paper inside, aluminum outside).
Lamination adhesives are used to bond together a variety of material layers, such as aluminum on paper, and board or films on paper or board. For lamination to be successful, the adhesive must display sufficient adhesion to the different materials and surfaces.
